According to the U.S. Department of Census, people with disabilities are almost twice as likely to start a business as non-disabled individuals. 14% of people with disabilities working are self employed, compared to 8% of non-disabled persons.
Why are so many people with disabilities starting businesses each year?
This trend may be due in part to the disastrously high unemployment rate among people with disabilities. Everyday people with disabilities are choosing to become self-employed so they can work at their own pace in an environment that accommodates their special needs. Owning their own business often provides the flexibility that is necessary to those who require frequent medical attention, flexible hours, accessible work space, or other special considerations.
How Do We Help?
Pre-Assessment:
The DBA offers counselors an opportunity to have a pre-assessment prior to a comprehensive feasibility study. The pre-assessment includes a meeting with the counselor and client, review of business concept, interview with client, and recommendation analysis. 20% of the clients that complete the pre-assessment choose a complete different vocational direction.
Feasibility Report:
A feasibility report reviews the opportunity for business success prior to completing a formal business plan. The feasibility report includes analysis of the client, analysis of industry, review of financial opportunities, and a 360 degree assessment of the business. 40% of clients that complete a feasibility study will not pursue small business as a self-employment option.
